SRINAGAR: The harsh winter chill continues to hold Kashmir firmly, despite a slight upward shift in minimum temperatures across parts of the region.
According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar saw the mercury rise to –1.9°C, a notable relief from the previous night’s bitter –4.4°C. In Qazigund, located in south Kashmir, the temperature settled at –1.0°C, compared to –3.0°C a day earlier, while Pahalgam — a popular tourist destination — registered –0.4°C after a dramatic jump from –5.6°C.
Parts of north Kashmir also experienced some respite, with Kupwara recording –3.2°C, improving from –5.0°C. In south Kashmir’s Kokernag, temperatures moved just above freezing at 0.2°C, rising from –1.2°C. Meanwhile, Gulmarg — renowned for its skiing slopes — logged 0.3°C, up from –1.4°C the previous night.
Despite the slight warming trend, authorities say the region remains in the grip of intense cold. Forecasts indicate predominantly dry conditions across Jammu and Kashmir in the coming 24 hours, with only a minimal chance of isolated light snowfall or rain at higher elevations.
