Cold Wave Tightens Grip on Kashmir as Srinagar Drops to –4°C

SRINAGAR: The cold spell across Kashmir grew harsher on Wednesday night, with several parts of the Valley recording further dips in temperature, an independent weather service reported on Thursday.

Srinagar shivered at a minimum temperature of –4.0°C, making it one of the chilliest nights so far this season. Qazigund followed closely at –3.6°C, while Pahalgam remained among the colder pockets at –4.8°C.

Many other areas in the Valley experienced similar conditions. Kupwara reported –3.2°C, Kokernag –0.8°C, and the famous ski resort Gulmarg settled at –1.0°C.

Several localities on the outskirts and in south Kashmir saw even lower temperatures. Pampore plunged to –5.0°C, Srinagar Airport recorded –4.6°C, and Awantipora touched –4.0°C. Budgam dropped to –4.2°C, whereas Anantnag, Baramulla, and Zethan Rafiabad each hit temperatures between –4.6°C and –4.8°C. Pulwama stood out at a biting –5.6°C, closely followed by Shopian at –5.3°C. Bandipora recorded –3.9°C, with Ganderbal and Sonamarg settling at –2.6°C and –3.6°C respectively. Zojila Pass remained the coldest location in the region with an extreme –17.0°C.

Meanwhile, the Jammu region witnessed comparatively moderate conditions. Jammu .city recorded 8.0°C, while Banihal and Batote posted minimums of 2.1°C and 4.7°C. Katra and Jammu Airport reported 8.4°C and 8.7°C respectively. Other temperature readings included Bhaderwah at 0.4°C, Kathua at 7.2°C, Udhampur at 3.0°C, Ramban at 4.3°C, Samba at 3.3°C, Rajouri at 1.7°C, Kishtwar at 3.6°C, Reasi at 6.1°C, and Doda at 4.7°C.

Ladakh, known for its harsh winters, continued to reel under sub-zero temperatures as well. Leh recorded a low of –9.0°C, followed by Kargil at –7.8°C and the Nubra Valley at –7.6°C.
