JIT Constituted As New Facts Surface In Dr Wardah Murder Case

ABBOTTABAD: Disturbing developments have emerged in the investigation into the murder of Dr. Wardah Mushtaq, who was abducted from the District Headquarters Hospital and later found dead.

DPO Haroon Rasheed revealed that the young doctor was murdered barely an hour after she was kidnapped. Police have also seized both vehicles believed to have been used by the suspects.

Investigators say Dr. Wardah had been anxious about safeguarding 67 tolas of gold ahead of her planned move abroad. One of the suspects, identified as Rida, allegedly persuaded her to hand over the gold for “safe keeping.” Instead, Rida reportedly mortgaged the jewellery and secured a loan of five million rupees.

According to reports, the provincial government has approved the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the high-profile case.

A letter has been forwarded to the Chief Secretary after the chief minister’s approval. The proposed JIT will be headed by a senior civil officer and will include representatives from the CTD, Special Branch, Police and Prosecution departments.

Rida, her husband Naveed, and two other suspects—Nadeem and Pervaiz—were produced before an Anti-Terrorism Court in Abbottabad on Monday. The judge granted police three days of physical remand. The key suspect, Shamraiz, remains at large and is being tracked by law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, anger is mounting in the medical community. Doctors and paramedical staff at Ayub Medical Complex continued their protest for a second day, shutting down both sides of the Karakoram Highway to demand justice for their slain colleague.

Reports indicate that Dr. Wardah was abducted on December 4 from just outside the hospital premises. Her body was recovered four days later from the Lari Banota area. Investigators believe she was first taken to an unfinished house in Jinnahbad, where she was strangled, and later buried near Thandiani.

An initial post-mortem examination confirmed strangulation as the cause of death. Deep marks around her neck suggest a rope or thick cloth was used, causing a fracture in her neck bone. The report further notes clear signs of torture.

Dr. Wardah leaves behind two small children. Her husband is employed in South Korea.
