ISLAMABAD: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has launched a new initiative titled “Glaciers to Farms Program” to assist Pakistan in tackling the mounting challenges posed by climate change to its water, agriculture, and energy sectors.
Under this comprehensive plan, the ADB will prepare an in-depth assessment of how glacier melt is affecting Pakistan’s economy and environment. The findings will help guide policies aimed at safeguarding water supplies, improving agricultural resilience, and strengthening energy infrastructure against the impacts of global warming.
The Bank has also engaged international climate specialists to provide expert input on glacier management strategies. Their recommendations are expected to be discussed at the upcoming International Convention of the East Asian Economic Association, taking place in the Philippines on November 8–9.
According to sources, the Glaciers to Farms Program is set to become an essential policy framework for Pakistan, focusing on better water management, advanced irrigation technologies, and strategies to reduce climate-related vulnerabilities.
