ISLAMABAD: Skywatchers are in for a treat tonight as the year’s most dazzling and largest supermoon is set to light up the night sky, appearing bigger and brighter across Pakistan and many other parts of the world.
A “supermoon” takes place when a full moon coincides with the point in its orbit closest to Earth, giving it a noticeably larger and more radiant appearance than an average full moon.
According to a spokesperson for SUPARCO, this will be the second of three supermoons expected this year. The moon is projected to reach its maximum brightness at 6:19 p.m., when it will be just 221,817 miles from Earth — appearing about 9.7% larger** and 16% brighter than usual.
The official added that Pakistanis will have an excellent opportunity to observe the event soon after moonrise, as the crisp winter skies will make for especially clear viewing conditions.
Astronomers recommend heading to darker, less light-polluted areas for the best experience. With one more supermoon expected in December, tonight’s spectacle promises to be a captivating display for astronomy enthusiasts and stargazers alike.
