NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote today on a US-proposed resolution supporting former US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative, including the deployment of an international security force.

According to Washington, delaying action could risk a resurgence of violence—an outcome American officials warn would be catastrophic.

The resolution, revised multiple times during intense diplomatic negotiations, formally “endorses” the peace plan that enabled a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas beginning October 10. The truce followed two years of devastating conflict in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 assault on Israel.

In its current form, the draft empowers the establishment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF). This force would coordinate with Israel, Egypt, and newly trained Palestinian police units to secure border regions and oversee the demilitarisation of Gaza.

The ISF’s responsibilities would include dismantling weapons held by armed non-state groups, safeguarding civilians, and ensuring humanitarian aid routes remain operational.

The resolution also proposes the creation of a transitional governing body for Gaza, referred to as the “Board of Peace.” Under the plan, Trump would theoretically lead this body until its mandate concludes at the end of 2027.
