NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep alarm over the latest Israeli strikes that claimed the lives of 33 Palestinians in just a few hours, his office confirmed on Thursday.
Speaking on the Secretary-General’s behalf, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres remains worried about the “extremely fragile” nature of the current ceasefire efforts. “Given that the UN is not a guarantor to the truce, we cannot certify whether it is fully holding,” Dujarric noted. “What we can say is that people are dying — Palestinians are dying — and this must come to an end.”
Dujarric stressed that the organisation’s immediate priority is accelerating humanitarian support for Gaza, where the population continues to suffer after two years of conflict.
“At this moment, the focus of the UN — under the framework of President Trump’s plan — is to ensure aid keeps flowing. We are making maximum use of whatever access we have to get assistance to those in desperate need,” he added.
