WASHINGTON: Two members of the National Guard were injured Wednesday in a shooting incident just blocks from the White House, officials confirmed. Authorities quickly secured the area and apprehended a suspect.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said authorities are “in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.”
According to law enforcement sources, the suspect was also shot during the incident. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. One National Guard member sustained a gunshot wound to the head, according to a source familiar with the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Former President Donald Trump condemned the attack on social media, calling the shooter an “animal” and warning that he would “pay a very steep price.” Trump also expressed support for the National Guard and law enforcement, stating, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People.”
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots near Farragut Square, a busy outdoor area and subway hub near the White House, and described seeing people flee the scene. Angela Perry, who was nearby with her two children, said she saw National Guard personnel running with weapons drawn toward the metro after the shots were fired.
Local emergency services responded promptly, transporting three gunshot victims to nearby hospitals. Secret Service agents were observed securing the perimeter, some with weapons drawn, as part of the immediate response.
Trump, who is currently in Florida, was briefed on the situation by his team and described the incident as “tragic.”
The shooting comes amid increased National Guard deployments in cities such as Washington, Los Angeles, and Memphis, where troops have been sent to assist law enforcement in addressing crime and managing immigration-related operations.
