PESHAWAR: Three police personnel were martyred and two wounded when militants launched an assault on a security checkpost in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday night.
The attack unfolded at the Qazi Talab checkpost along Shahu Road, where terrorists opened intense gunfire, prompting a sustained exchange of fire between the attackers and on-duty officers, according to local police officials.
District Police Officer Khan Zeb Khan stated that the officers on-site put up strong resistance as they engaged the assailants. As the confrontation escalated, additional police contingents were dispatched to the location to support the operation being overseen by the DPO himself.
Authorities reported that three policemen embraced martyrdom during the clash. The fallen officers include LHC Waheed Shah and Constable Abdul Samad, while the identity of the third officer was confirmed by the DPO. Two other officials sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
Following the incident, police and security agencies launched an extensive search operation across the surrounding areas in an attempt to track down the fleeing attackers.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi denounced the assault, describing it as a “cowardly act aimed at disrupting peace.” He stressed that such incidents cannot shake the resolve of the security forces, saying that terrorists “have no faith or humanity.”
Afridi pledged that those responsible would be hunted down and punished, assuring full support from the provincial government to the families of the martyred and injured officers.
The attack has raised alert levels across the region, leading authorities to bolster security at vulnerable police posts and increase patrols to prevent further incidents.
