LAHORE: Large parts of the provincial capital remain covered in a dense grey layer, pushing pollution levels to dangerous heights. Recent measurements placed Lahore’s average Air Quality Index at 275, a level considered hazardous. Several localities showed even more severe readings: Ravi Road 302, Lower Mall 515, Iqbal Town 517, Sanda Road 497, FC College 466, and Saddar Cantt 437. Other major cities are also affected, with Faisalabad touching 410 and Multan rising to 367.

Experts warn that the persistent spike in air pollution could trigger widespread health problems. They recommend limiting outdoor movement, using masks, and avoiding early-morning exposure when smog tends to thicken.

In response, Punjab has intensified its anti-smog campaign. The Transport and Mass Transit Department is conducting round-the-clock checks on vehicles contributing to pollution. Between November 1 and 8, inspectors examined 4,184 vehicles in Lahore. These inspections resulted in 877 challans, the impounding of 288 unfit or smoke-emitting vehicles, and fines on 671 overloaded goods carriers. Penalties during this period reached Rs 8 million.

Authorities also reported that 255 FIRs have been filed and 208 drivers taken into custody for repeated violations as part of the crackdown.
