LAHORE: Punjab is once again blanketed in toxic smog as polluted winds drifting from India worsen air quality across the province, pushing Lahore to the second spot on the list of the world’s most polluted cities.

Recent environmental reports show Lahore’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to a dangerous 471, with several localities recording even more alarming figures — Lower Mall at 804, Gulberg 758, Sanda Road 745, DHA 724, and Shalimar 585.

The situation is no better in other parts of Punjab. Gujranwala reported an AQI of 637, Faisalabad 365, and Multan 245, all of which fall within the “hazardous” category and pose severe health threats to residents.

Doctors and health specialists have advised the public to stay indoors whenever possible and wear protective masks when stepping outside, warning that long-term exposure to smog can trigger asthma, heart disease, and other respiratory problems.

In view of the worsening air quality, the Punjab government has adjusted school and college schedules — all institutions will now start at 8:45 a.m. from today to limit early morning exposure to polluted air.

Officials say continuous monitoring is underway and have urged citizens to support anti-smog efforts by cutting down on vehicle use, avoiding open trash burning, and adhering to government guidelines.
