SRINAGAR (IOJK): Another inmate has lost his life under mysterious circumstances in Udhampur District Jail, marking the second such death in just four days and sparking alarm over the grim state of prison conditions in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK).
According to local media reports, the deceased has been identified as Sukhvinder Singh, 37, son of Balwinder Singh and a resident of Resham Ghar Colony, Jammu. He had been detained on charges related to narcotics smuggling.
Sources said Singh was discovered unconscious in his barrack early in the morning. Jail officials immediately shifted him to the District Hospital, Udhampur, from where doctors referred him to the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu due to his deteriorating condition. However, he passed away while being transported to the facility.
This second death in such a short span has ignited widespread concern among rights groups and civil society activists, who are questioning the apparent negligence of jail authorities and the overall safety of prisoners held under trial in IOJK’s detention centers.
Authorities have yet to provide a clear explanation for the repeated incidents, further deepening suspicions about the treatment of inmates inside these facilities.
