ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed that a controversial proposal seeking criminal immunity for the sitting Prime Minister be removed from the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
In a statement posted on X, Shehbaz Sharif said that after returning from Azerbaijan, he found that several PML-N senators had introduced a clause in the Senate to shield the Prime Minister from criminal proceedings. He clarified that this provision had never been included in the version of the bill approved by the federal cabinet.
While acknowledging the intentions of the lawmakers who submitted the clause, the Prime Minister directed that the amendment be withdrawn immediately. He reiterated that a democratically elected Prime Minister must remain fully accountable before both the law and the public.
Sources confirmed that Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has been officially notified of the decision.
Meanwhile, the Joint Committee of the Senate and National Assembly on Law and Justice met on Sunday under the co-chairmanship of Senator Farooq H. Naik and MNA Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk to continue reviewing the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The committee is finalizing its discussions on the proposed changes, while the issue of lifelong immunity for the president is still being debated.
