ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has given the green light to a comprehensive five-year strategy aimed at improving the country’s flood preparedness and resilience, Federal Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik announced on Wednesday.
Speaking at a joint press briefing with the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Malik said the plan centers on three core actions: repairing existing protections, expanding current systems, and constructing new climate-resilient infrastructure. The strategy comes in response to the severe destruction caused by recent floods across the country.
The prime minister has directed authorities to begin work immediately on the short-term components of the plan, which include strengthening embankments and integrating upgraded early-warning mechanisms within the next 200 days.
Officials emphasized that the long-term goal is to build infrastructure capable of withstanding future climate-driven disasters and to reduce the human and economic toll of flooding.
