ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has cautioned that Pakistan may resort to targeting terrorist hideouts inside Afghanistan if cross-border attacks continue, warning that any provocation would be met with an equivalent response.
Speaking on a private television program, the minister said Pakistan would no longer tolerate the growing wave of terrorism emanating from across the border. He noted that most recent attacks were carried out by militants based in Afghanistan, many of whom are Afghan nationals.
“The statements of condemnation from the Afghan Taliban carry no real sincerity,” Asif remarked. “Their words are limited to expressions of regret, while terrorists continue to use Afghan soil to strike Pakistan.”
Referring to the Cadet College Wana attack, the defence minister praised the Pakistan Army for its swift and successful operation that ensured the safety of all cadets.
Asif also alleged that India is exploiting Afghan territory to sponsor and facilitate anti-Pakistan activities. “Our neighbour’s hostility is no longer hidden,” he said, adding that Islamabad is fully aware of New Delhi’s designs and remains vigilant.
The minister further warned both India and Afghanistan against any “misadventure,” emphasizing that Pakistan would respond firmly and proportionately. “We will pay back in the same coin,” he reiterated.
While acknowledging the role of friendly nations willing to mediate, Asif expressed deep mistrust toward verbal assurances from Kabul. “Even our allies understand that India is orchestrating these attacks,” he said, alleging that Indian consulates in Afghanistan are providing funding to militant groups targeting Pakistan.
