ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has clarified that a brief exchange of fire took place along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier near Chaman after armed elements from the Afghan side targeted Pakistani border posts without provocation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry said Pakistani forces delivered a prompt yet measured response, ensuring the situation did not escalate. Authorities noted that the troops on duty maintained discipline and acted responsibly throughout the incident, enabling matters to settle quickly.

The government firmly refuted assertions from Kabul that Pakistan had triggered the confrontation, maintaining that the initial shots originated from the Afghan side. Officials stressed that Pakistan’s actions were focused solely on restoring calm in the area.

According to the ministry, the ceasefire agreement between the two neighbours remains fully in place. Islamabad reiterated its commitment to ongoing engagement with Afghan authorities and expressed optimism that both sides would work together to avoid similar flare-ups.

The border incident comes as delegations from Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban continue their third round of counterterrorism and border security talks in Istanbul, where both sides are seeking ways to enhance cooperation and ensure stability along the frontier.
