ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime have mutually agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire starting from 6 p.m. today (Wednesday), the Foreign Office confirmed.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the truce was reached at the request of the Afghan Taliban authorities and finalized through mutual understanding, following several tense days along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

In its official statement, the Foreign Office said that both sides had decided to suspend hostilities for 48 hours to create space for diplomatic engagement and peaceful resolution of the recent escalation.

“A ceasefire has been agreed upon by mutual consent between the Government of Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime for the next 48 hours from 6 p.m. today, at the request of the Taliban,” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry expressed hope that this brief cessation of fire would allow both sides to pursue constructive and meaningful dialogue aimed at a durable solution to the ongoing conflict.

“During this period, both sides will make sincere efforts to find a positive and lasting solution to this complex but solvable issue through dialogue,” the statement added.

Background: Retaliatory response and misinformation claims

Security sources reported that prior to the ceasefire, the Pakistan Army had carried out effective retaliatory actions, destroying several hideouts, posts, and armored vehicles belonging to the Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij militants.

The sources said Pakistan’s forces delivered a firm and decisive response to repeated acts of aggression, inflicting heavy losses on the other side. Following these setbacks, the Taliban reportedly sought a ceasefire to de-escalate the situation.

Officials also dismissed circulating social media videos allegedly shared by Taliban elements as fabricated and misleading, terming them an attempt to distort facts.

Security personnel reiterated that the Pakistan Army remains fully vigilant and capable of giving a stronger response to any future provocation.

In recent days, Pakistani forces successfully thwarted multiple coordinated attacks launched from across the border in Spin Boldak area of Chaman, underscoring the intensity of the cross-border tension that preceded the ceasefire decision.
