SRINAGAR: A Kashmiri dry fruit vendor who attempted self-immolation after being detained for questioning by Indian forces and local police has passed away from his injuries, officials confirmed on Monday.
Bilal Ahmad Wani set himself on fire on Sunday in Qazigund. He was first taken to a hospital in Anantnag, but as his condition worsened, doctors shifted him to Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital, where he later died due to extensive burns.
Wani and his son, Jasir Bilal, had been held for interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged terror module. While Wani was released shortly afterward, his son remains in custody, officials said.
According to authorities, Wani lived close to the residence of Dr. Muzaffar Rather, who is considered a key figure in what they describe as a “white-collar terror module.” Dr. Muzaffar is believed to be in Afghanistan, while his brother, Dr. Adeel Rather, was arrested earlier this month on November 6 in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
