CAIRO: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that at least 67 children in Gaza have lost their lives even after a declared ceasefire was supposed to halt the fighting — a stark indication of how unstable and inconsistent the truce has been.

At a briefing in Geneva, UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said the figure includes an infant girl who died on Thursday when an Israeli strike hit a home in Khan Younis. Seven more children were killed a day earlier as Israeli attacks continued across the Strip.

“This has happened during what is meant to be a ceasefire. The trend is shocking,” Pires said, noting that the deaths occurred after October 11 — the first full day of the US-mediated pause between Israel and Hamas.

He reminded journalists that behind each number is a life abruptly ended. “These are not just figures on a sheet. Every one of them was a child with a family, hopes, and a future — all erased in ongoing violence.”

UNICEF has consistently warned that children remain the most vulnerable in Gaza. The agency estimated last month that since the war began in October 2023, around 64,000 children have been killed or injured as a result of Israeli military operations.
