NEW DELHI: The head of India’s prominent Muslim body, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH), has voiced serious alarm over what he described as intensifying discrimination and entrenched Islamophobia affecting Muslims across the country.

Maulana Arshad Madani highlighted multiple forms of marginalization confronting the community, citing the repeated incarceration of senior Samajwadi Party figure Azam Khan and the detentions linked to investigations into the recent Delhi blast. Madani, who also leads Darul Uloom Deoband, asserted that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is actively working to deny Muslims access to education, employment, property rights, political influence, and social mobility.

Addressing an audience at his seminary, Madani sharply rebuked the Modi administration, stating: “A Muslim can become mayor of cities like London and New York, yet in India, a Muslim is not even allowed to head a university.” He added that even when Muslims do attain high posts, they risk persecution: “Look at Azam Khan — when he became Vice-Chancellor, he landed in jail. What is happening with Al-Falah University today? The message is clear—the government is determined to prevent Muslims from lifting their heads.”

On questions over Judicial Fairness, Madani took aim at India’s legal system, arguing that it facilitates the indefinite imprisonment of individuals without conclusion of due process.

Referring to Al-Falah University founder and chairman Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, he remarked, “He sits in jail, and no one can say for how long. How can someone be detained endlessly when the allegations remain unproven?”

Siddiqui has recently been placed under 13-day custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over allegations of money laundering and falsified accreditation. Authorities have also issued a demolition notice for his hereditary property in Madhya Pradesh.

Madani lamented that even after more than seven decades of India’s independence, systemic barriers continue to obstruct Muslim progress in academic, administrative, and leadership roles. He further warned that state actions appear directed at seizing Muslim-owned land—some of which, he claimed, has *“already been taken away.”
