MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has encountered another challenge, with reports indicating a sharp decline in its overall brand value in 2025 following the departure of several high-profile players and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the region.
According to Indian media, including the Times of India, the league’s brand valuation has dropped by around 20 percent, falling to approximately $9.6 billion from an estimated $12 billion last year. The downturn has also affected individual franchises. Mumbai Indians, one of the league’s most valuable teams, saw its brand value dip by 9 percent to about $108 million.
Other franchises recorded even steeper declines. Royal Challengers Bangalore reportedly lost 10 percent of their value, while Chennai Super Kings experienced a 24 percent drop. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals were hit hardest, with their brand valuations shrinking by 34 percent and 35 percent respectively compared to the previous year.
The slump comes after several prominent overseas players chose to step away from the IPL ahead of the 2026 season. South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, England all-rounder Moeen Ali and Australia’s Glenn Maxwell have all ended their association with the league, with two of them confirming they will compete in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Du Plessis described his decision to move on as a difficult but thoughtful one. In a message shared on social media, he reflected on his 14-year journey in the IPL, thanking teammates, coaches and support staff, and said he felt it was time to embrace a new opportunity. He later confirmed that he will feature in the upcoming PSL season.
Moeen Ali, who previously represented Multan Sultans in the PSL during the 2020 and 2021 editions, also voiced his enthusiasm about returning. He praised the league’s competitive nature, noting that since its launch in 2016, the PSL has established itself as a platform for high-quality T20 cricket featuring closely fought matches and skilled players.
