ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s women footballers are poised to make history as they prepare to feature directly in a FIFA competition for the first time, a landmark moment for the country’s sporting landscape.
The team’s inclusion comes through the FIFA Football Series, a programme launched under the leadership of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The initiative brings together national sides that did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup, which takes place every four years, giving them an international platform to compete.
Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Mohsin Gilani welcomed the development with enthusiasm, calling it a major breakthrough for the sport in the country. He noted that although Pakistan has previously taken part in FIFA qualification campaigns, this will mark the nation’s first direct participation in an official FIFA event. Gilani also expressed appreciation to the FIFA President for extending the opportunity.
According to Gilani, the team’s presence in the Women’s FIFA Series is expected to motivate young players nationwide. He said seeing Pakistan represented at a FIFA stage is a proud achievement and has injected fresh optimism about the future of football in the country, describing it as the start of a new phase of growth.
Currently ranked 154th among 198 teams in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, Pakistan has been grouped with Ivory Coast for the 2026 Women’s FIFA Series. Details regarding fixtures, opponents and match dates are expected to be announced later.
