LAHORE: The provincial capital has once again been declared the most polluted city on the planet, as hazardous smog and a blanket of dense fog continue to choke large parts of Punjab.

Data from an international air quality index showed Lahore hitting a dangerously high AQI of 327, putting it at the top of the global pollution rankings. Karachi trailed behind with an AQI of 282.

Within Punjab, Kasur emerged as the most polluted location with a staggering 348 AQI, according to measurements by the provincial Environment Department. Gujranwala also reported alarming levels at 341, while Sheikhupura recorded 278 AQI — all far above safe limits.

Health experts have warned that the toxic air is especially dangerous for vulnerable groups, including children, seniors and those with asthma or other respiratory ailments. Officials have advised residents to limit outdoor movement and wear protective masks when stepping outside.

The deteriorating air quality has been compounded by heavy fog, which has significantly reduced visibility and disrupted travel. Motorway authorities closed the M-5 from Multan’s Shershah Interchange to Zahir Pir, while parts of the M-1 between Peshawar and Burhan were also shut down as a safety measure.

A Motorway Police spokesperson said visibility on certain stretches had fallen to perilous levels, leaving no option but to suspend traffic. Commuters were advised to use fog lights, keep safe distance between vehicles and plan travel during daytime hours — ideally between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. when conditions are relatively clearer.

Authorities stressed that temporary route closures were essential to prevent accidents and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel until the smog and fog situation improves.
