PARIS: Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has declared Israel the deadliest country for journalists this year, stating that almost half of all media workers killed in 2025 lost their lives due to Israeli attacks.
In a report released on Tuesday, the Paris-based press freedom watchdog said Israeli forces were responsible for the deaths of 29 Palestinian journalists in Gaza. The organization described Israel as the “worst enemy of journalists” in its annual review.
According to RSF, a total of 67 journalists were killed globally over the past year — slightly higher than the 66 recorded in 2024. Israel alone accounted for 43 percent of these deaths, the report noted, covering the period from December 2024 onward.
RSF highlighted that the deadliest single incident occurred on August 25, when a “double-tap” strike hit a hospital in southern Gaza, killing five journalists, including two who worked with international news agencies.
The report further stated that since the Gaza conflict escalated in October 2023, nearly 220 journalists have been killed, making Israel the deadliest country for media professionals for the third consecutive year.
Despite repeated appeals from global media organizations and press freedom groups, foreign journalists are still barred from independently entering Gaza. Only controlled visits organized by the Israeli military have been allowed, limiting independent reporting from the conflict zone.
