ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will receive Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto today (Monday) for a two-day official visit that is expected to open a new chapter in ties between the two countries.
The visit is particularly significant as Pakistan and Indonesia celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations this year. It also marks the first trip by an Indonesian head of state to Pakistan since 2018.
During his stay, President Subianto is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He will also hold an important meeting with Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. His interactions with Pakistani leadership will set the tone for renewed strategic cooperation.
Formal delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will cover a wide range of sectors, including economic partnership, defence collaboration, science and technology, education, cultural exchange, health, IT, climate resilience and enhanced trade and investment.
Diplomatic sources say several agreements and memorandums of understanding—along with a new cooperation framework—are expected to be finalised during the visit.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the trip reflects the shared values of both nations and their mutual commitment to regional peace, stability and sustainable development. Officials view the visit as a major step toward revitalizing high-level engagement between Pakistan and Indonesia.
The last Indonesian presidential visit to Pakistan took place in 2018 when Joko Widodo toured Islamabad. President Subianto’s arrival is therefore seen as a milestone in strengthening bilateral and regional cooperation.
As the capital prepares to host the high-profile delegation, Islamabad’s main avenues have been decorated with welcome banners. President Subianto, accompanied by senior ministers, will be in Pakistan from December 8 to 9 on the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Officials on both sides expect the visit to significantly boost ties between the two leading Muslim nations, particularly with multiple MoUs ready for signing during the talks.
