BEIJING: A tragic incident early Thursday in Yunnan province claimed the lives of 11 people and left two others injured when a test train struck a group of railway workers, authorities reported.

The collision took place at Kunming’s Luoyang Town Railway Station while seismic detection equipment was being tested on the tracks. Officials confirmed that the workers had entered the curved section of the track just as the train approached, resulting in the fatal crash.

Emergency crews responded immediately, providing medical assistance to the two surviving workers, who were hospitalized with injuries. Railway operations at the station resumed later in the day, with officials stating that ongoing procedures for care and recovery were proceeding in an “orderly manner.”

An official investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. Preliminary findings indicate that the workers accessed the track ahead of the approaching test train, but investigators are continuing to review the sequence of events.

Railway authorities expressed their profound condolences to the families of those killed and injured. They emphasized that all responsible parties will face accountability under relevant laws and regulations.

In response to the tragedy, officials pledged to strengthen rail safety measures. The railway department announced plans to enhance oversight during testing procedures, implement stricter safety protocols, and ensure the stability and security of rail transport in the future.
