LAHORE: A petition has been submitted to the Lahore High Court challenging the recently passed 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill.

The challenge, filed by lawyers Muneer Ahmed and Mian Shabbir Ismail, argues that the amendment deprives the Supreme Court of Pakistan of its original jurisdiction and disrupts the constitutional structure set out in 1973.

According to the petitioners, the amendment elevates the newly created Federal Constitutional Court above the Supreme Court, altering the balance of judicial authority and weakening the apex court’s standing. They warned that such a shift could have serious implications for judicial independence.

The petition further asserts that the sitting parliament lacks the legitimacy to act as a true constitutional assembly and therefore does not possess the authority to enact amendments of this magnitude.

It also contends that the changes infringe upon Islamic provisions, compromise judicial autonomy and violate fundamental rights protected under the Constitution. The petitioners have requested the Lahore High Court to strike down the amendment, describing it as unconstitutional and contrary to democratic norms.
