SRINAGAR: A devastating explosion at the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, left at least nine people dead and 29 others wounded after seized explosives accidentally went off late Friday night, officials said.
According to police sources, the blast occurred while officials were inspecting a stockpile of confiscated explosive material inside the station. The incident comes only days after a deadly car explosion in New Delhi that claimed eight lives.
Most of those killed in the Srinagar blast were police personnel, including members of the forensic team who were examining the materials at the time.
Several of the injured remain in critical condition, officials noted.
“The process of identifying the victims is ongoing, as some bodies were severely burned,” one official said. Others told reporters that the explosion was so powerful that body parts were found as far as 100 to 200 meters from the station, even landing in nearby residential areas.
A local police officer described scenes of chaos as the explosion tore through the building, sparking a fire that quickly engulfed parts of the compound. Firefighters were dispatched immediately to contain the blaze.
The region’s police chief is expected to hold a press briefing to provide further details on the incident.
The explosion comes amid heightened security concerns, following the recent car blast in New Delhi that authorities have labeled an act of terrorism.
