ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has formally accepted the resignations of Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah, who stepped down amid the controversy linked to the 27th Amendment.
According to the Presidency, both judges had submitted their resignation letters directly to the President, and the documents have now been endorsed in accordance with constitutional requirements.
The two senior judges tendered their resignations on Thursday after finalising their decision. Officials noted that the letters were dispatched to the Presidency shortly after they concluded their discussions.
Sources within the court said the judges met their colleagues for farewell interactions in their chambers late Thursday evening. Fellow judges reportedly tried to dissuade them and continued their efforts until the last moment, but both remained resolute.
After the meetings, Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah handed in their resignations and quietly exited the Supreme Court premises.
Their departure marks a major shift within the judiciary as the debate over the 27th Amendment intensifies. Attention now turns to the process of filling the newly vacated posts.
