NEW YORK: Russia has submitted its own draft resolution on the Gaza crisis, setting up a direct challenge to Washington’s push for Security Council approval of a US-backed text supporting President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza peace framework, according to reports from the UN.
The United States circulated its draft to all 15 members of the Security Council last week, arguing that it has backing from regional partners. The American proposal seeks approval for a two-year interim governing arrangement along with the deployment of an international stabilization mission.
In response, Russia distributed a note to Council members on Thursday afternoon—reviewed by Reuters—stating that its alternative was crafted with the US document in mind.
Moscow’s mission wrote that its goal is to help the Council adopt “a balanced, acceptable and unified approach” aimed at securing a durable halt to the fighting in Gaza.
