ISTANBUL: Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban government have agreed to extend their ceasefire following a week-long series of discussions in Istanbul, according to a joint announcement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday evening.

The talks, which ran from October 25 to 30, were facilitated by Turkey and Qatar with the goal of reinforcing the truce that was initially reached in Doha earlier this month.

As part of the new understanding, both sides consented to form a joint monitoring and verification mechanism to ensure compliance with the ceasefire terms. The system is designed to “guarantee the continuity of peace,” the joint statement said.

Under the proposed arrangement, any breach of the agreement would result in penalties for the violator. Details regarding the enforcement measures are expected to be finalized in the next round of discussions scheduled for November 6, also in Istanbul.

Turkey and Qatar commended both delegations for what they described as a “constructive and responsible approach.” In a joint statement, the mediators reiterated their commitment to supporting long-term peace and stability in the region.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry, in a separate note, expressed satisfaction over the progress made during the Istanbul sessions and voiced optimism that the upcoming November meeting would cement a framework for lasting peace. Qatar also extended gratitude to Turkey for hosting the dialogue and contributing diplomatically to maintaining the truce.

Information Minister Atta Tarar, welcomed the joint declaration, saying it aligns with Pakistan’s position and underscores the Taliban’s responsibility to prevent cross-border terrorism.

“The situation will remain under observation until November 6,” Tarar told reporters. “Should any terrorist incident occur during this period, the Taliban will be held accountable.”

He added that Pakistan had sought firm assurances from the Taliban that Afghan territory would not be used against it, and praised both Turkey and Qatar for their “active and sincere” role in mediating the discussions.
