NEW YORK: Pakistan has renewed its call for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), describing the existing system of permanent membership as outdated, undemocratic, and unrepresentative of today’s global realities.
Addressing an open debate of the Security Council held to mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said the idea of individual permanent membership “has become the most obsolete concept in today’s world.”
He argued that the current structure allows a handful of nations to prioritize their own political interests over those of the wider international community. “The permanent members neither reflect the diversity of today’s world nor are accountable to the global community,” he said, adding that most UN member states see this arrangement as the root cause of the Council’s credibility crisis.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar cautioned that **expanding the number of permanent members without addressing the core issue of exclusivity would only deepen divisions.
“Those seeking to enlarge their special club are merely trying to preserve their old privileges,” he remarked.
He urged the influential member states to support a process of genuine and inclusive reform that strengthens democratic values within the UN system. “We must move beyond privileges and work towards a fair, representative, and accountable global governance structure,” he said.
Referring to the debate’s theme — “The United Nations: Towards the Future” — the Pakistani envoy emphasized that future international systems must reflect the spirit of the UN Charter, grounded in justice, equality, and shared prosperity.
“The UN was founded on the ideals of collective peace and cooperation,” he noted. “To uphold those principles, the global order must serve all nations equally, not just a few powerful ones.”
Ambassador Iftikhar concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and democratic reform, urging member states to work collectively toward a more transparent, representative, and effective United Nations Security Council.
