Houthis Confirm Military Chief’s Death, Israel Claims Responsibility

Al Ghamdi - Naya Ksdhmkit - NK

SANAA – Yemen’s Houthi movement has confirmed the death of its top military commander, Muhammad Abdal-Karim al-Ghamari, describing him as martyred “while performing his duties.”

The announcement came shortly after Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said that al-Ghamari had been killed in an Israeli strike. Katz wrote on social media that Israel would continue to act similarly “against any threat in the future.”

In their statement, the Houthis vowed that the confrontation with Israel was far from over, warning that Israel would “face deterrent punishment for its crimes.”

Al-Ghamari’s death follows earlier Israeli airstrikes in August that targeted senior Houthi figures in Sanaa, killing Yemen’s Houthi-appointed prime minister and several cabinet members.

The development comes amid a fragile, U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, now six days old. The truce has paused Israel’s two-year assault on Gaza, which has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and drawn accusations of genocide from international rights organizations and a U.N. inquiry.

Since the start of Israel’s offensive on Gaza in October 2023, Houthi forces have repeatedly launched drone and missile strikes toward Israel, declaring their actions as part of a campaign of solidarity with Palestinians. The group has also attacked vessels in the Red Sea, prompting retaliatory strikes by the United States and the United Kingdom on Houthi positions inside Yemen.

In their latest statement, the Houthis denounced what they called Israel’s “brutal aggression” against Yemen’s population, civilian areas, and infrastructure, saying their people continue to face these assaults “with patience, determination, and resilience.”
