SRINAGAR: The historic Mughal-era mosque located in Shadimarg, Pulwama, is slated for major restoration after the government approved a renovation project worth over Rs 22 lakh.
Officials confirmed that funding has been released and that repair work is expected to begin shortly. The announcement follows longstanding appeals from local residents who have repeatedly urged authorities to preserve the centuries-old structure.
Believed to be more than four centuries old, the mosque stands as one of the oldest surviving examples of Mughal architecture in south Kashmir. Residents say the building is not only a religious site but also an important cultural and architectural landmark.
“This mosque reflects the craftsmanship of our ancestors. Its thick walls and traditional design are unmistakably Mughal,” said Shadimarg resident Zakir Ahmad. “We have been requesting its conservation for years, and it’s encouraging to see the government finally respond.”
Another local, Nadeem Ahmad, said the site has significant tourism potential if restored with care. “The area is naturally beautiful, and the mosque itself is a heritage asset. Proper restoration could draw visitors who appreciate historical and cultural sites,” he noted.
Over the years, the structure has suffered damage from harsh weather, ageing, and lack of upkeep. Cracks have appeared in several sections, and parts of the building have weakened, prompting concerns about long-term preservation.
Residents welcomed the funding approval as a step toward safeguarding the monument. “This project was overdue. The sanctioned amount will help stabilise the structure and prevent further decay,” said another villager.
According to officials, the renovation plan prioritises preserving the mosque’s original architectural character, ensuring that its historic identity remains intact.
Locals hope the restoration will not only protect an important heritage site but also encourage heritage tourism in Pulwama, giving a boost to the area’s socio-economic development.
